Counterfeit-Comsetics

Don’t Be Fooled by Skin Care Counterfeits!

We at Ikran’s Cosmetics know sometimes it can be hard to spot counterfeit products whether cosmetic or in any other aspect of life. That feeling that you have been tricked is not a nice one! And what is more the product that you have purchased can have damaging effects on your health, talk about a kick in the teeth! This why we have created this blog to warn customers about the dangers of counterfeit products, how you can spot them and the benefits of investing in good skincare products.

In 2018 Kenya imported around 15 million kilograms of cosmetics and if you add the sophistication of counterfeiters and sheer number of products it can be hard to stop all counterfeit skincare products from reaching consumers.

Counterfeit beauty products are becoming increasingly common and according to statistics by Incopro it is easy to see why individuals want to cash in on the cosmetics industry. By 2024 the market is expected to be worth $863 billion and with skincare products making up 36% of the market, counterfeit skincare products are a big business!

We do not want you to suffer the consequences of faulty skincare products because we value you so much!

The dangerous chemicals used to make counterfeit skincare products and what that can do to your body.

Lead is a very common ingredient in the production of counterfeit skincare products, in certain cases it can be 19 times over the legal limit, this insane level of lead in your body can cause anemia, reproductive issues, weakness, kidney and brain damage and even death, which no one wants.

Arsenic, also a common feature in fake skincare products is very deadly too and long-term exposure can result in thickening of the skin, darker skin, abdominal pain, diarrhea, heart disease, numbness, and cancer, which is enough to steer someone away from counterfeit skincare products for good!

Mercury another dangerous chemical can cause issues with the nervous, digestive and immune systems, lungs and kidneys, and can be fatal, and if you thought it couldn’t get any more dangerous you are in for a shock, if you are pregnant it can cause complications with the development of the baby.

Other chemicals and dangerous items that can be found in counterfeit cosmetic products include copper, beryllium, cadmium, aluminum, cyanide, paint stripper, animal feces, urine and bacteria. These unwanted items can have side effects ranging from swelling of the eye to skin irritations.

Another concerning aspect of counterfeit skincare products are where they are produced, the knock off cosmetics products are created in unsanitary and dirty warehouses which have no regard for health and safety and consumer care. These products are being created with the intention of making them as quickly as possible and getting them onto the market. This carelessness can create a host of problems when consumers apply counterfeit products on to their body.

How to spot fake cosmetics products

One way to spot fake cosmetics is by checking the pricing, if you find the skincare product you love and think it is the bargain of the century there is a chance it could be a counterfeit. Brand names have similar prices no matter where you shop therefore if the price is too low think again.

Another way to unearth a counterfeit is to check labels on the products. Fake cosmetics will have words that are misspelled, missing ingredients list, patterns that do not match and uneven fonts.

Products that come in poor quality packaging are a big red flag. Counterfeit products might also not fit in the box like they are supposed to and might contain mirrors and other items that do not fit either.

Lastly fake cosmetics will normally have a chalky or thin consistency compared to their real counterparts due to cheap production. Also, cosmetics that smell overly chemical can be a sign that they are a counterfeit.

Although buying counterfeit cosmetic products can be a cheaper alternative and can save you some money it is not worth the risks, the dangerous items that were outlined above can cause serious damage to your body, in some cases cannot be reversed and in severe cases can lead to death.

Therefore, I urge all the individuals reading this to be on the lookout for fake cosmetics, follow the tips on how to spot counterfeits and to remember that when you buy authentic cosmetic products you are not only investing in your outer appearance but you are also protecting your health and your future! If you have found this blog informative, why not share it with family or friends to help protect them too.

Skin Care Products

This blog has been a longtime coming! For some time now, we have been asked to help bring some clarity and understanding on the following commonly used skin care products. These 5 products are common in most Anti-Aging creams, Acne serums and many other skin related creams/serums.

  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Lactic Acid
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Retinol

Most of them are advised NOT to be used in combination with each other so we strongly recommend you research thoroughly before applying anything on your skin. For most of us who are skincare connoisseur, you find that you go through years of experimenting different products until you find the perfect routine for your skincare. And it is not easy! This Blog is going to help you understand what these different products are for and what stage in your skincare journey they be can be used.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is an amazing substance that is naturally produced by skin and it enhances the appearance of skin by giving it a healthy and smooth look. This substance is particularly important for keeping skin hydrated and its role is to lock in moisture thus allowing your skin to feel soft and rejuvenated, leaving your skin feeling silky smooth!

As we get older hyaluronic acid levels drop and this allows the signs of ageing to make a dramatic entrance, queue wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin. Hyaluronic acid however is the shining knight in armor who comes to the rescue, this substance can help skin retain its youthful looks and keep signs of ageing at bay. Ageing skin loses moisture and hyaluronic acid helps to counter this imbalance. Who needs friends when you have got Hyaluronic acid?

This amazing substance also helps people with dry skin as it has moisture retaining properties, as if it could not get better those who suffer from acne could benefit from hyaluronic acid too. If you live in a city, hyaluronic acid should be part of your skin care routine as pollution can decrease the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin.

Hyaluronic acid can be used in the morning and at night too. As with any skin care product see how your skin takes to it and then judge how often you need to use it, but it should not be used more than twice a day.

Fun Fact

1 gram of hyaluronic acid can retain up to six liters of water.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid works to unclog pores and exfoliates skin, it also has antibacterial attributes. Salicylic acid is structured in a specific way that allows it to infiltrate deep into skin which means it can help to stop pores from becoming clogged and can also get rid of clogs that are present. Salicylic acid breaks down the glue that are between cells, exfoliates and reduces the oil secretion. It is basically a hard-working cleaner that removes all the dirty stuff that gets inside your pores, Salicylic acid is great!

Salicylic acid can help prevent acne because it separates the bonds between skin cells and due its deep exfoliating properties it removes dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells leaving skin feeling rejuvenated and clean.

Therefore, those who suffer with acne should incorporate this substance into their skin care routine. Salicylic acid can also be used to fight blackheads, whiteheads and oily skin, it is an ant-inflammatory substance so can reduce irritation and redness that can occur with pimples, talk about multi-tasking, whew that sounds like hard work.

Have issues with dark spots and acne scars? Salicylic acid can also combat this by dismantling old skin cells and allowing new skin cells to be created, this process can lighten darks posts and make acne scars less visible. It also helps to stop these marks from forming, this is a win-win right?

Salicylic acid can be used both in the morning and at night but individuals using this for the first time should test it out once a day to see how their skin reacts to it.

Fun Fact

Salicylic acid is derived from willow trees.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is naturally found in milk, lactic acid can be used to exfoliate skin, lighten dark spots and lessen wrinkles and lines, we were always told milk is good for us and its true!

Lactic acid works to regenerate cells and create a brighter complexion while also creating softer and more hydrated skin, if your skin has suffered damage from the sun, lactic acid can really help this. Everybody loves a bit of sun, but it is important to know how to protect yourself from too much exposure.

Lactic acid also locks in moisture and therefore helps with signs of ageing and as mentioned before it can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, those pesky things! It also exfoliates the skin by dissolving old skin cells and allowing new skin cells to be generated.

If lactic acid is used consistently it can combat signs of ageing, it helps to stimulate collagen and firm skin. Lactic acid is also known to improve hyperpigmentation, dark patches or spots that develop on the skin.

Dead skin cells are replaced by new skin cells in a fast manner when we are young, but ageing, damage from the sun and other factors can make this process slower or can even halt the process altogether which can lead to skin that looks dull and increase signs of ageing, which let’s face it no-one wants. But we have a solution, lactic acid can help to combat all these problems and can restore youthfulness and vigor back to the skin.

Lactic acid can be applied once every night. However, if your skin is sensitive you can apply it once per week.

Fun Fact

Cleopatra, legend tells us, regularly bathed in milk to keep her skin looking lovely.

Retinol

Retinal contains Vitamin A, this substance encourages skin regeneration and increases collagen production, as you get into yours 30s collagen starts to decline, if only we could stop the clock at 30. It also decreases the appearance of wrinkles and lines as well as decreasing adverse effects of sun damage.

Regular use of retinol can have many positive effects one of them is stimulating the production of collagen, which leads to skin that is softer, firmer, hydrated and free of wrinkles and lines, wow retinol is sounding good already!

Retinol also increases the speed of skin cell renewal which helps to create an even complexion and smoother skin. It also works to reduce hyperpigmentation and creates skin that has a healthy complexion.

Retinol also helps skin that suffers with blemishes, it speeds up skin regeneration and cleans clogged pores therefore helping skin to appear clearer and creating a fresher look.

Retinol can be incorporated into your skin care routine every evening, however if you find some irritation while using it you should try using it once a week and then work from there as your skin gets more used to the high levels of vitamin A.

Fun Fact

* Retinol should always be paired with sunscreen and antioxidants.

Glycolic Acid

Lastly, we have our friend Glycolic acid, it works by penetrating deep into skin and breaks up dead skin cells, this results in skin that has a brighter complexion and even tone. Glycolic acid also helps to regenerate new skin cells. Glycolic acid can benefit those with acne, uneven skin and signs of ageing.

Glycolic acid helps to treat and prevent acne by un-gluing dead skin cells from each other in skin pores which helps to get rid of dirt and other unwanted products, because of its deep exfoliating properties glycolic acid helps to create skin which is healthy and smooth, what could be better?

Clogged pores which contribute to acne can also in the long-term lead to skin looking less vibrant and speed aging. However, our good friend glycolic acid gets rid of those dead skin cells therefore producing skin that is revitalized and rejuvenated which gives us a youthful and bright complexion.

Glycolic acid also removes excess pigment that is stored from acne scars, sun damage and age spots, this cleaning process can prevent hyper-pigmentation and gives skin an even tone. It can also stimulate collagen production which fights signs of ageing.

Glycolic acid can be applied once per day either in the morning or evening, however you should first test how your skin reacts to it and then workout a skincare routine that incorporates it.

Fun Fact

Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane

Pre-Wedding Skincare Routine

If you have ever seen a bride-to-be in the last few weeks before her wedding, you’ll know that there’s an incredible amount of work that goes into that special day. The event lasts a few hours, but the time that goes into planning, organizing, and rehearsing can’t be measured.

On a day such as this, the last thing you want is your skin acting up. However, all the stress from wedding planning can lead to a breakout. While you can try to hide it with makeup, the best way to get flawless photos and look fresh and confident on your big day is to have a pre-wedding skincare routine.

Here’s how the Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions 3-Step System can help your skin look smooth and blemish-free for your wedding.

What Is the 3-Step System?

The anti-blemish solution comes in a set of three different products that you need to use in a set order. One set can easily last for around four weeks, which means you should start at least a month before your planned wedding date. The three steps include cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing to clear your skin and prevent breakouts.

If you’re more prone to breakouts and have skin that takes longer to adjust to new skincare routines, you may want to start sooner to prevent any redness or irritation closer to the wedding day.

Step 1: Anti-Blemish Solutions Cleansing Foam

The first product in the set is meant to get deep into your skin and take out the dirt and oil from your pores. You’ll notice a clear difference in the way your skin feels once your pores are unclogged. When you initially start deep cleaning your skin, you might notice that there’s a bit of irritation or even a mild breakout in the initial days. This is because the dirt and grime in your pores is coming to the surface and needs a little time to clear up altogether.

Oily skin leads to more acne, which is why the salicylic acid in the cleansing foam is so important. It reduces oil and cleans out your pores, so your skin feels tighter and perhaps a little dry. Don’t worry about the dryness, however, because you’ll be moisturizing in the last step. Use this how you usually use soap, by lathering up foam and applying it all over your face. Even though it’s only the first step, your skin will feel lighter and cooler after you wash the foam off.

Step 2: Anti-Blemish Solutions Clarifying Lotion

Now, on to the second step. This is an exfoliant, which is an essential measure when it comes to clearing out blemishes for good. Exfoliants clear out dead skin cells and make your skin look more vibrant. Once your skin is clear of dead skin cells, you’ll feel like your skin can finally ‘breathe’. This helps reduce acne breakouts in the future and also reduces blemishes.

Exfoliants are especially important when you have sensitive skin that can’t be cleared with a scrub. It’ll feel cool and icy, making your pores smaller and clearing out even more dirt. Use a cotton swab to dab this all over your face. When you open the product, you’ll notice that there’s a layer of powder that is settled at the bottom. Give the container a good shake before using, to mix all the ingredients together.

Step 3: Anti-Blemish All-Over Clearing Treatment

The final step is the clearing treatment for moisturizing, treating, and clearing your skin. It helps reduce any irritation you might feel from the chemicals in the first two steps and lessens redness as well. It also moisturizes your skin, but just enough to not make it excessively oily or clogged.

It’s light and absorbs right into your skin for a soothing effect, without the shininess or stickiness you usually feel with regular moisturizers. It’s especially helpful if you’re prone to oily skin, because your skin doesn’t need as much moisture as dry skin does. It’s easy to pour out too much when it comes to water-based moisturizers, so be careful to take out a little at a time and apply it with the tabs of your fingers all over your face. It’ll prevent any peeling or drying you may encounter in the previous steps.

Why Is This Skincare Routine Effective?

Having a proper skincare routine in the weeks leading up to your wedding prevents any unforeseen circumstances from popping up, literally. When you’re regularly keeping an eye out for breakouts, acne, and blemishes and going through a three-step process to eliminate oil and dirt, your skin is being thoroughly cleansed.

If you’re a long-time victim of acne breakouts, you’ll know that there are always a few signs that tell you there’s going to be a pimple erupting from your skin in the next few days. That’s because the oil and dirt that build up beneath your skin, inside of a clogged pore, don’t just build up overnight.

A breakout usually happens from inconsistent cleansing and exfoliating practices, which leaves your skin dirty and clogged for long periods of time and finally pushes it to breakout and leave blemishes right before your wedding day.

If you’re prone to breakouts during your period or from high stress levels, you’ll want to make sure you use a skincare routine throughout this time frame, to prevent any blemishes from remaining when it’s time to glam up for your big day.

Final Thoughts

leading up to your special day, take out a few minutes each day and address your skin’s needs. With three products that aim to (1) deep clean and take out dirt and oil buildup  (2)exfoliate and remove dead skin cells that hinder your skin’s shine and vibrance (3) moisturize and treat your skin, you’ll be focusing on every aspect of skincare in only one routine.

Eau De Toilette Vs Eau De Parfum

Shopping for perfumes can be confusing, not only do you have the daunting responsibility of finding one that you love but then you’re also expected to know the difference between EDP and EDT. The combination letters we find on our perfumes; these abbreviations stand for Eau De Parfum (EDP) and Eau De Toilette (EDT) both found in perfumes for Men and Women. Most of us have asked ourselves why they smell different or have found ourselves buying one thinking it is the same one you always bought but it smells lighter or stronger. To be fair, both style of perfumes are similar in ingredient but they carry different strengths in perfume oil. In our Blog today we will endeavour to help you distinguish the two types of perfumes so you have a better understanding when you are shopping for that perfect scent.

Eau De Toilette, Contrary to popular beliefs is not fake, this perception might come from the fact that it has a lower concentration level in perfume oil. It is a light perfume and it has a lower concentration level of 8-12% which makes it a little cheaper to buy than EDP. The word ‘toilette’ is French and it refers to perfume water women apply before going out, in other words, getting yourself ready for the day and freshening up. This reflects the nature of EDT as it is light, fresh and not in your face. It makes for good daywear and it will gradually fade during the day. Most people recommend applying unscented lotion on your body before spraying EDT to help lock in the scent and increase its longevity

Eau De Parfum, contains between 15% and 20% concentration of perfume oil and for that reason it is much stronger and it lasts longer on the skin, quite irresistible to anyone you might be trying to impress. EDP is found to be bit more expensive than EDT but you’ll find that you use Eau de toilette twice as much to achieve longevity because of the lower perfume oil content and you’ll get through the same-sized EDT twice as much as an EDP, so, you’re not really saving any money. However, with Male perfumes, designers tend to usually produce EDT or Cologne rather than EDP on their collection as most Male perfumes are strong anyway.

Simply put, they both have different uses and appeal to different consumers. Having said that, it’s always good to have both of them in your closet so you can switch between the two scents.

Check out our collection of EDP and EDT.
